These have black seeds inside. Another favourite of slugs and snails - keep an eye on the plants so they don't end up eating more of the beans than you!
This year I’ve planted a couple of climbing beans at the base of a tree to see if they will twist around its trunk. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails as they love bean plants.
A perennial so will come back year after year. It is tall and elegant and once the purple flowers die back the seed heads remain attractive into the autumn and winter. Cut back for regrowth the following year.
Wildlife love this plant - be careful it will self seed so you'll end up with plenty more in the garden. Before turning into the familiar prickly seed head the flower is an amazing luminescent purple. It grows to at least 2 metres so keep it at the back of your planting - especially as the stem is prickly too.
This is a edible and great to include in salad leaves. Reminds me of samphire without the salt. It will grow to about 20cm high and 30cm wide. Pick the shoots to eat raw or you can blanche them.
A tall perennial that will come back year after year. Plant towards the back against a wall or fence. Colours will vary - blue, pink, white and purple.
These giveaway plants and seedlings are a token of trust in the positive benefits of being with nature.
At home in recent weeks our family have kept occupied by sowing seeds that were originally intended for a networking of community gardening ideas around Highams Park.
We are delighted to be able to gift these young plants for you to enjoy this summer and beyond.
This site is a place for information about the plants. If you have any ideas or suggestions for community growing then please do email growingnetwork@outlook.com
